Usually, when most people think of aging…..they hate it! However, there are some positives that come out of being older. At 22, I’ve always been the oldest out of all my friends and that has always meant waiting patiently for everyone to turn 21! When I turned 21, it was kind of awkward because everyone was still underage and couldn’t drink with me. Now as a senior in college, my friends have all finally turned 21.
During the weekends, my friends and I go barhopping. Here are my recommendations to some of my favorite bars within the Philly area! Most of them are featured on Sansom Street in Philadelphia.
McGillin’s Old Ale House:
McGillin’s is one of Philly’s oldest bars since 1860. They have two floors at the bar. The drinks are cheaper on the first floor; I’ve gotten a vodka sour for $6 there. The second floor has an open mic area. It always gets super crowded, but it is a fun place to be. They are also known for their Lucky in Love stories, many couples have met at McGillin’s and have been featured in their Love Letters book.
Midnight & The Wicked:
Midnight & The Wicked has such a fun dance floor! They have an open dance floor and a fancy dining area as well. I have been there a few times. My roommates and I have been there for Halloween! Their drinks are a little bit on the expensive side. The interior design inside the place is super fancy. The dance floor can get pretty crowded towards the end of the night. They also have a coat check area so you can wear whatever you want without having to worry about the cold weather!
U-Bahn:
U-Bahn has a unique subway theme (the name is inspired by the transportation system in Berlin) and it is located downstairs. It is a mixed bag, you never know what kind of crowd will be there. Some nights, there are people closer to thirty and other nights there are college-aged kids. Their prices for drinks are pretty average. What makes U-Bahn so cool is that there is a room for the DJ booth and you can dance inside of it. My friends and I have danced inside the DJ booth before and it is so much fun! The regular dance floor is long, but when it gets crowded it feels pretty tight.
Concourse Dance Bar:
Concourse Dance Bar is a fun bar right behind the Jefferson train station. Concourse usually has a younger crowd. It has two floors, but the first floor is where all the fun is! They have a photobooth, dance floor, ice bar, and a ball pit to jump in. Yes, you heard that right….there is indeed a ball pit at this bar! The ice bar is a separate room where the temperature is super chilly, they offer drinks, and you can cool off after feeling overheated from dancing. The room is decorated in ice. The rest of the interior design of the bar is very youthful and neon. They have events with different DJs each week. Upstairs is a lounge area. The prices aren’t too bad for drinks, and you can even order a fishbowl. The place is kind of dead earlier in the night so the best time to come to Concourse is towards the end of the night!
So, the next time you think about aging….don’t be sad! Look forward to partying it up with your friends and trying out some of these bars!
