Loco Mag is seeking college-age writers, photographers, videographers, designers, and interviewers to contribute to our latest issue! For those who aren’t familiar with our work, Loco is a lifestyle and culture magazine always on the hunt for new articles, photo spreads, and fresh takes on student perspectives. We are not strictly a news publication or a creative writing publication. We want to hear from you! We want your stories in your voice and your words.
Merriam-Webster defines the term “unc” as “a shortening of the word ‘uncle,’ often used humorously to indicate old age,” stating that “it is often used humorously on the internet in the phrase ‘unc status’ to imply that someone is old, getting old, or acting older than their age. Someone referred to as unc may also exhibit behaviors that are considered outdated or out of touch.” Ouch.
If you’re reading this, you have almost certainly had an encounter with someone like this at least once at some point. Perhaps your parents or grandparents are resistant to newer ways of thinking and insist that you need to do things their way. You may feel like their methods of doing things are outdated, motivating you to embrace newer, less strenuous means of accomplishing certain tasks.
Alternatively, maybe you’ve noticed that you yourself are displaying certain unc behaviors on a regular basis. In a world that is steadily becoming increasingly reliant on technology and artificial intelligence, you choose to stand out from the crowd and be less reliant on electronic devices. You may prefer the old-fashioned ways of experiencing life, such as using a typewriter, capturing photos with a film camera, or sending handwritten letters to friends and loved ones.
No matter where you fall on the unc spectrum, we want to hear from you!
Need more inspiration? Here are some keywords to get you started: old, granny, out of touch, elderly, uncultured, ancient, elder, past their prime, wisdom, OG, washed, uncle, aunt, age, wise, unc status, good God, siblings, slowed down.
Our sections include Travel, Lifestyle, AV Room (Audio/Photo/Video), Entertainment, Mood, and Features. Features typically run around 1,500 words. Have more than that? Cool! If not, no worries. We’re an electronic publication so space is unlimited. We’ll accept anything from a 250-word photo spread to a 500-word interview to an hour-long podcast to a 2-minute video. Be creative, and tell your truth.
Submit your work by Sunday, February 15th, at 11:59pm. You can submit by clicking the “submissions” tab right below the featured slider on the homepage.
