When coming back from a hiatus–professional, creative, personal, or anything of the like–we often end up facing a question. It’s the same question over and over again because beginnings are often the same: Where do we begin?

We’ve been gone about a month here at Loco, and we spent some time searching for the right way to come back. We landed on it rather quickly but with a bit of a set up you might find familiar. At the beginning of a television show or film (most famously, something like Saturday Night Life,) we’re thrown right into the story, pulled from our own world and into a new narrative, alerting us of what’s to come.

Welcome to Cold Open, our 47th issue of LocoMag. Our staff brought together a winter issue full of openings, closings, and cold hard truths. It’s an issue I’m so excited to introduce, and you will not want to miss it.

You can find Rosa’s wrap up on New Years 2020, Danita’s piece on the realities of “inspiration porn,” Eric’s detailing on a decade of cold box office openings, Jo’s quiz on winter facts for those more used to warmer air, and so much more throughout the week.

We hope it’s warm enough for you in this issue. The heat is broken. We’re so excited for you to open up with us.
