“Because you’re mine, I walk the line.” There are many songs that have interesting lyrics throughout. Some are funny, while others are just attention-grabbing and profound. Musicians that do this make listeners want to listen to the song again, hooking us and making us think about how the line fits with the song as a whole to make a story.

“One Vision,” Queen

“Just gimme gimme, gimme, gimme fried chicken.”

This ending line seems to have no point. It does not fit into the song that talks about having a dream and vision of a better world and working towards that goal.  When sung in the song, the line does sound like “one vision” if you are not paying attention, so it may be placed there to see if the listener was actually listening. The song is upbeat and catchy while having an amazing message.

“Going to California,” Led Zeppelin

“Took my chances on a big jet plane/ Never let them tell you that they’re all the same.”

This song talks about making a journey to California to try to find love and success. This line resembles the part of the journey that involves an airplane, but the phrase “Took my chances on a big jet plane” is not a phrase commonly used. The next line is just as thought provoking and odd. Many people can relate to the story of wanting to escape the town where they grew up.

“La Vie Boheme,” Rent Soundtrack

“To days of inspiration, playing hookey, making something, out of nothing, the need to express to communicate.”

This song in the musical is pretty random, but there is an overall arch of the song that follows the plot of the musical. However, the first few phrases of the song are pretty random.  Nobody played hookey in the movie version of the musical. The song is catchy and pulls together a lot of the musical’s plot line. Many phrases throughout the song are relatable.

“I’m Yours,” Jason Mraz

“I tried to be chill but you’re so hot that I melted.”

This song is a funny depiction of what it feels like to be around someone that you are crushing on. No matter how cool people try to act around someone they have a crush on, they tend to get tongue tied and generally fail at being cool (though it is funny and cute to watch). So many can relate to feeling like an idiot in front of their crush.

“Bonfire Heart,” James Blunt

“Your mouth is a revolver firing bullets in the sky.”

This opening line of the song gives a very profound yet almost comical visual of what our words to when they leave our mouths. Words have the power of bullets and we need to use them very carefully. Words can hurt, but they can also empower. The whole song is filled with little phrases such as this one, making the listener think about the power of words. The song is also very catchy, making the song as a whole brilliant.

Music has the power to be so profound and thought-provoking. It can get a huge message across poetically and quickly.
