Winter is a rough time of year. It’s cold, shoveling snow is hard, scraping ice off of a windshield is annoying, and it’s even harder to get out of bed each day. That’s not even the worst part of it. The thing that makes me really mad at winter is the fact that ice cream shops close for the season. Once it hits November, most places close their doors until March.

Why? I still eat ice cream in the winter and I know I’m not the only one. I mean, I know it’s cold outside, but who says you have to eat it in the cold? A lot of places have indoor seating that will protect you from the chill of winter. Plus you could always eat it in your car or, depending on your order, wait until you get home to eat it. The winter closing phenomenon is especially confusing to me when it comes to businesses who sell other things besides ice cream. Richman’s Ice Cream & Burger Company is my favorite ice cream shop on this Earth, and they sell burgers, fries, chicken tenders, fried Oreos, and many other delicious treats. I would still go there in December for the other foods (and also the ice cream), but I have to live without for a few months each year. There’s no substitute for Richman’s, trust me.

This also applies to you, Rita’s. There’s legitimately no substitute for their water ice. Go on, try to name one. You can’t! There’s only one place that I trust with my water ice needs and it’s Rita’s. For now, I am without water ice. I would like to take this opportunity to shout out the very loyal Dairy Queen, which remains open and maintains me until spring.

You could say that winter closure probably makes us appreciate our ice cream shops more while they are open. However, the closure makes me dread winter and contributes to my winter sadness. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be counting down until March, when shops re-open and my life starts again.
