Since the end of the Spring semester, the staff at Loco Mag has been planning a summer issue. Loco Mag has only done one summer issue before, Raison D’Etre in summer of 2017. Summer editions don’t happen every summer, but what else were we going to do in quarantine? Originally, we were planning on releasing some of the regularly scheduled Loco content you know and love.
And then George Floyd was brutally murdered.
And then protests erupted, not only across the country, but around the world. Millions of people demanding justice and equity stormed the streets and demanded that the country do and be better. Something snapped in our society and we will no longer accept the way things were. We will continue to fight and educate ourselves and others until there is equal justice for everyone, until Black Lives Matter is a given, and not something people need to be convinced of.
If there is no justice, then there is no peace of mind.
We wanted to use our voices, our platform, to release content that maybe will do some good. Maybe we can bring to light issues that need attention. Maybe we can put things that people have been thinking and feeling into words that make sense. The very least we can do is stand in solidarity and use our voices to express our love and support. We see you, we hear you, and we will fight for you in every way that we can.
I am so proud of everyone who worked on Issue 51. I want to shout out and say a huge thank you to Kenzie, Danita, and Julie who made time in their summer schedules to pull this together. The excitement and passion I saw in these articles inspired me so much, and I hope it does the same to everyone else that reads them.
