The nice thing about having a younger sibling is that sometimes, the two of you decide to agree on liking something. This happened with my sister and I about 3 or 4 times with Minecraft.  We would watch a lot of Minecraft content on YouTube—I was quite fond of SkyDoesMinecraft myself—and envied the people who were allowed to get cool mods.  Even more than that, we listened to an unbelievable amount of Minecraft parody songs.

This is something I feel like a lot of preteens who were a little too into Minecraft experienced.  I could bring up a song I remember to a friend and they’re usually like “Oh yeah, I used to love that shit.” The lyrics stick with you forever; it’s been years and I still get certain songs stuck in my head.  As I listened to some of the songs I used to enjoy, I still knew most of the words to all of them.  The impact they had on my preteen years was indescribable.

Listening to some of the songs again, a lot of them had similar themes.  Lots about being absolutely demolished by various mobs—especially creepers (aw man)—and finding diamonds.  There were even 2 I could list off the top of my head about making cake in Minecraft.  The cake ones are weird to me. “Oh god I’m dying! I’m at half a heart and I desperately need to eat!! Oh, I know, I’ll get a food that has ingredients that aren’t readily available to me and make something rather than just kill that cow right next to me!” Get real, dumb fucks.  Cake is for fun when you kinda just have the ingredients and go “You know what? I think I can make a cake right now. That’d be kind of swag.” Stop being picky, eat some damn pig or some apples you find from a tree that’s literally right next to you, and keep going.  God, I never understood the reason for the cake songs. But I won’t lie, they made little 11-year-old me go absolutely bonkers.

Something I noticed when I revisited my old favorites is the vocalists.  Honestly, many of them sound like they were done by the same nasally white man.  Now these nasally white men don’t necessarily sound bad.  They have talent and they don’t make my ears bleed, so it’s not really the worst thing.  Like if you said “Revenge” and “I’ll Make Some Cake” were sung by the same person, I’d believe you (for those not well educated in the Minecraft Parody Song Universe, they are not sung by the same person. Or they are and I’m just making an absolute fool of myself in front of all these cool Minecraft fans).  Usually my favorite touches of these songs are the horribly done autotuned parts and the half-assed ad libs done by these singers who obviously don’t know what they’re doing.  Really adds that “only doing this for my dumb baby idiot fans who will eat up anything I put out” (to those of you reading this who actually make or made Minecraft parodies for their own enjoyment and puts in effort to make them good, you’re doing a great service for this nation and I love you).

Two Minecraft parodies really stick out in my mind as old favorites that I can still get genuine enjoyment from.  The first is an underrated gem, in my opinion, called “A Creeper by You” by YouTube channel NowLetsPlayMinecraft.  This is a parody of Adele’s song “Someone Like You” and it does NOT disappoint. Remembering the existence of this song is one of the things I tend to do at least once a month year—along with rewatching Arrested Development and listening to a bunch of Billy Joel all at once for god knows what reason.  I remembered it about three weeks ago and asked my roommates if they knew it. They didn’t, but after listening to the song they really only had good things to say.  The vocals are genuinely pretty good.  The story of a creeper feeling sorry for blowing up a person but continuing to have the urge to destroy?? Lord, no other Minecraft parody song has such complex characters as this song does.  After listening to the song again with my poor roommate who has to listen to various Minecraft parody songs as I write this, she kept saying “why are the vocals so good??” Really a song that never got the credit it deserved. Incase you were wondering; my roommate is NOT having a good time listening to an of the other songs. If you’re reading this: I’m so sorry, please don’t move out.

“Never will I kill you again Steve / I’ve got no one in this world / I’m so lonely / It’s not my fault I’m crammed / Full of sulfur and sand / Crammed to the brim of my old / Worthless hated body.”-“A Creeper Like You” by NowLetsPlayMinecraft.

The other that comes to mind is EASILY one of the most recognizable is Fallen Kingdom by the one and only CaptainSparklez.  I’m sure bringing this song up again made some of you ascend directly to the heavens above, and rightfully so.  This absolute masterpiece is a parody of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.” The video tells the story of a king whose village gets absolutely demolished by mobs.  An absolute tragedy, really. The lyrics and animation really don’t spare the emotions of the viewer either. It’s just SO iconic and honestly SO well done, I can’t blame myself and others for getting emotional over this piece of YouTube gold.  I asked my sister when the last time she listened to it and she told me that it was more recently than she’d like to admit.  I don’t blame her.

“If this battle should leave me slain / I know Herobrine will call my name / Better to take a stand / That was when I ruled the land.”-“Fallen Kingdom” by CaptainSparklez.

There’s also MCap Steve, a satirical Minecraft parody artist whose content is a little tough to listen to sometimes, but good lord he DELIVERS.  He parodies some songs that I’ve never thought would’ve been parodied ever, which I appreciate so much.  “Mine Oddity” is his parody of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and it’s not a creation I EVER thought God would allow.  I can’t complain though. Bless you, MCap Steve.

All in all, Minecraft parodies hold a special place in my heart. Not by choice, though. These songs literally cannot leave my brain, I’m likely cursed with them.  Please stream “A Creeper Like You”, though. It’s life changing.
