I know bagels with cream cheese are great and yummy but be honest… you can do better. This is my “Eat Better Bagel.” This shit is crack, I have to keep myself from eating it as breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The ingredients are the following:

  • Bagel
  • Cream cheese (Trader Joe’s Cream cheese is dope)
  • Small shallot (shallots are onions but good)
  • Tomato
  • Salt, preferably Trader Joe’s Garlic Salt (has rosemary, roasted garlic, & onions included in salt)
  • A toaster you idiot, do you eat raw bagels or some shit?

While the bagels toast, cut the shallot, preferably a small one if you’re making just one bagel. You want to dice it into small pieces. Then cut tomato slices. The amount of slices you’ll need depends on the size of the bagel and tomato, but you’ll want relatively thick slices.

Once the bagels are toasted, spread the cream cheese. Then spread the diced shallots on the cream cheese. Put the tomato slices on. Then put the salt/spices on. That’s it.

The beauty in this bagel is that it fulfills everything a normal cream cheese bagel is lacking. The tomatoes add umami, or savoriness, that satisfies the sort of light emptiness that a bagel can have. Even if it’s just salt, it pairs perfectly with tomato. When you first bite into this you might be surprised at the sharpness that the shallots bring. That’s called flavor, kid. You should learn to use more than one tastebud. I love it but if it’s too much for you, you control how much shallot goes on the bagel. It also contrasts with the creaminess of the bagels and makes your tongue sing.
